GIG REVIEW: AT SUNSET
Starstruck September guest post by reader Cat

Local Adelaide band At Sunset took to the stage on Sunday night at The Gov in Adelaide.
Headlining the gig; the boys (Harrison, Andrew and Jae) took to the stage to entertain the crowd.
With the gig being held with the intention of conquering cancer; the boys managed to raise a staggering $4,200.
Speaking first hand from attending the gig it truly was one of the boys’ best gigs to date. The atmosphere of the venue was relaxed and when the boys hit to the stage (after the support acts Something to Rescue and Ash Gale), the mood of the entire room was lifted.
As the boys began to play, they successfully obtained the overwhelming support and enthusiasm from the crowd.
The boys themselves were lifted with energy. That was evident by their beyond excellent performance. With each song better than the previous one.
By the end of the entire night, the boys left the audience feeling pleased…and it was all for a good cause too.
So to all those who just read this. If you haven’t already checked them out then do so because they’re only going to get better.

DANCE ACADEMY IS THE BEST SHOW EVER… NO LIKE SERIOUSLY!

Starstruck September guest post by reader Jen

Dance Academy… It’s sort of like The Breakfast Club.

Put a bunch of teenagers – each of them so very different from the other – in school and you’ve got the standard premise for a children’s television show.

There’s the wide-eyed country girl, who reeks of positivity and optimism, and exudes Natural Talent. A boy from the Wrong Side of the Tracks who needs this to not be in jail, despite his capabilities. The Darling of the dance world and her brother; she questions whether she deserves to be there and he’s desperate to prove himself in spite of his famous surname. A girl who has been dreaming of the National Ballet Company and working towards this moment since she was a toddler in her mother’s dance studio, and just doesn’t get along with the sweet, sensitive Jewish boy who dances much to the disappointment of his father, because Real Men Don’t Dance.

But for Dance Academy that is where the cliché’s end.

If perfection is what you strive for and nothing is perfect, how do you overcome that? You work harder, become more meticulous, but when it is your body that’s working against you, can you fix that too?

Everyone you’ve ever cared about has left, so what makes this place so different? You can’t let yourself get too attached, too comfortable, because this is only temporary until you are out on your own. At least, that’s what you tell everyone.

If you aren’t dancing to rebel, then why do you do it at all?

By playing the Class Clown you build up a wall between yourself and the reality of your life. You’ve never been a ‘typical family’ and for the most part you don’t let it bother you, but you have to wonder whether your mother knows you at all. And if you take away the part of you that she’s interested in – the dancing part – do you have a relationship at all?

A belief in fairytales and Happily Ever After is fine, but can you really keep your head in the clouds and flying high when your wings are clipped and you come crashing back to earth?

I want to make something perfectly clear. This show is aimed at teenage girls, probably from the age of 13 to 17, a demographic which I am not in. And yet I started watching from the middle of Season 1 and haven’t looked back. What can I say? I was lured in by attractive people, and pretty dancing, and was fully prepared to become mildly interested in the inevitable love triangle between the good girl, bad boy and heartthrob.

But what they don’t tell you about Dance Academy – it’s not listed anywhere on the ABC3 website – is this show sucks you in, and suddenly you’re marathoning the entirety of Season 1 on Youtube and googling spoilers and pawning over pictures of Jordan Rodrigues’ face, and before you even realize it you’re hooked.

And then the writers decide to grab you firmly by the chest and rip your heart out.

This is one of the only shows where I have openly sobbed – like, my mum had to knock on my bedroom door and ask if I was okay – and if you remain spoiler-free then it’s like a punch to the guts and you wonder about the point of humanity and where is the justice, if you can’t trust a kids show about dancers.

So, while this seems like a deceptively simple show, I can assure you it is not. Each character is layered and storylines intertwine, and it has a better grip on continuity than many other Australian adult dramas.

It is also unprecedented in its popularity. For some reason I do not understand why Screen Australia do not commission children’s series’ for more than 2 seasons, and yet Dance Academy, was given a third (due to “exceptional circumstances”) – because you can not end the show RIGHT THERE! – albeit at half the number of episodes as the previous two.

So there is a sense of urgency in the storytelling this season as you can tell they are trying to bring together all the unresolved storylines. But if you thought they were going to tie everything up in a nice little package of Everyone Can Achieve Their Dreams, then you’re a certainly mistaken. As one of the characters puts it (and I can’t help feeling this is a message from the Writers to the Fans): “You can’t wrap the entire Academy experience up into a bow.

We are on the cusp of the final episode and I have never been more excited/nervous/weary of a finale in any fandom I’ve been a part of (except maybe Harry Potter, but that is something unto itself). I keep trying to remind myself that it is a children’s tv show, what could they possibly do? But Dance Academy has never followed the formula and certainly never shied away from hitting the hard and difficult stuff right where you know it’s going to hurt. And if anything, this show has certainly reinforced my belief that if everything seems too good to be true, then it probably is.

Now here is my challenge.

If you haven’t watched this show then there are 52 episodes and two full Series already on Youtube waiting for you. I also maintain that no one can sit and watch the first two seasons without reaching episode 51 and balling your eyes out. If you can, then you are quite possibly a robot.

When it comes down to it: Dance Academy is special.

There is no other show like it, and I doubt there ever will be. It’s a show that makes a big deal of the things that need to be highlighted, and doesn’t dwell on the other stuff. It knows that being a teenager is hard and you go through more self-discovery in that short space of time than at any other age. It understands that life is funny, unexpected, and challenging.

And it’s only when you get out the other side that you get a chance to sit back and reflect, thinking to yourself: “Did I really do all of that?”

The final episode of Dance Academy airs Monday, October 30 at 6:05pm on ABC3.

SUMMER BAY SADNESS… INDI’S FINAL FAREWELL
Starstruck September guest post by reader Ciara

It is now time for Home And Away’s Indi to receive Romeo’s ashes.
Romeo as we all knew and loved on the show has unfortunately died. Back in March all of us Home And Away fans saw Romeo leave Indi without telling her why and Sid had to explain everything to her.  Since then life for Indi has not been a piece of cake (definitely not a fudge cake from the Diner).
She has had a lot more down moments than up moments but now life for Indi is somewhat brighter as you all would know! She is happy with Chris.
Then again happiness doesn’t last forever, definitely not in Summer Bay anyway and very soon Indi will receive Romeo’s ashes.  This will be very tough on Indi but I know for sure that Samara Weaving will do an amazing job!
Cast your mind back to when Sid told Indi of Romeo’s cancer and Samara’s acting was out of this world! Pure talent.
All the best in the future Samara! I hope one day I’ll have the pleasure to meet you!! Lots of love from Ciara in Ireland xxxx

GOOD GIRLS GO BAD
Starstruck September guest post by reader Jasmine Leigh

We’re halfway through September and if you’re anything like me you’re counting down the days until our favourite Aussie celebs, Claire Holt and Phoebe Tonkin grace our screens in the brand new Vampire Diaries spin off, The Originals.
Looking back three years I still remember the highlight of my Friday afternoon not being the end of a school week, however the pleasant sight of Phoebe and Claire on my screen as doe eyed Cleo Setori and perfectionist Emma Gilbert.
However after then following Phoebe to her next supernatural show, The Secret Circle, which oh so sadly ended last June and Claire to The Vampire Diaries I have to say I much prefer them both as bad-asses.
Now playing pregnant werewolf Hayley in The Originals, I’m extremely looking forward to what’s in store for Phoebe’s character and the bond that’s about to be forged with almost sister-in-law Rebekah Mikaelson (Claire’s character) as a battle in the homeland of Vampires, New Orleans wages.
You can catch Phoebe and Claire in the season premiere of The Originals on October 3rd 9/8c.

TWO YEARS OF SASHA BEZMEL
Starstruck September guest post by reader Rose-a-lee Angrisano

31st of August has passed.. You’re probably wondering why I’m bringing this date up.
Well, being a massive fan of ‘Home and Away’s popular newcomers, I obviously have obviously marked character arrivals & departure in drama town, Summer Bay on my calendar.
Demi Harman has been potraying Sasha Bezmel on the Aussie soap Opera for two years now. Time has flown. Her storylines have included family members injured, a nasty love triangle and ups and downs in love. There have been lots of challenging storylines.
Being a viewer and a fan, I’m very proud and will support her to the end!
I’m so grateful for the times I’ve met her. Hopefully I’ll see her gorgeous, quirky self again soon!

EXCLUSIVE - REBECCA BREEDS CHATS TO ‘I AM STARSTRUCK’
Since leaving Channel 7’s ‘Home and Away’, Aussie actress Rebecca Breeds has been working on a couple of exciting projects abroad.
One of them is a new Bollywood film and after posting some sizzling shots and footage last week (click here if you haven’t seen it), we’ve decided to dish the deets from the Summer Bay alumni herself… here is our chat with the gorgeous Rebecca Breeds!
I AM STARSTRUCK: Why did you choose to work on a film like ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’?  Why Bollywood?
REBECCA: I was excited about this project because it was such a unique opportunity. Not only did we get to travel to India and Thailand to shoot it, but it was a period piece.  My character was a lot of fun and I loved the depth of the true story of Milkha.  Our characters had to communicate without a common language. He speaks Hindi and I speak English in the film and our characters really fall for each other anyway. Very cute.
I AM STARSTRUCK: How did you land the role?
REBECCA: In December 2012 my agent told me about the film and the director so I flew to Melbourne for the day to meet him. We chatted for an hour and he told me all about the film. Then he asked me to do an audition and next thing I heard, I had the part.
I AM STARSTRUCK: What was the highlight of shooting this film?
REBECCA: The highlight of this film was probably doing the dance sequence.  This was quite the essential Bollywood experience full of energy and colour. Our choreographer Shiamak and his team are some of the best in the business and it was an amazingly fun and completely exhausting couple of days. We also got to visit the Taj Mahal in Agra and an Eco beach resort in Goa which were incredible!
I AM STARSTRUCK: What can we expect to see from you in this movie?
REBECCA: Well firstly they dyed my hair blond-ish which took a lot of getting used to. My character Stella is fun loving and really bubbly so that was refreshing for me after my ‘Home and Away’ storylines. She falls for Milkha immediately and they dive into a steamy romance.
I AM STARSTRUCK: What was it like working closely with one of Bollywood’s biggest actors Farhan Akhtar who played the lead role of Milkha?
REBECCA: Farhan was so nice and very easy to work with. He is extremely charismatic, dedicated and professional so we had fun and did good work.
I AM STARSTRUCK: Why should your Australian fans watch ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag?
REBECCA: It’s an inspirational true story told with elements of Bollywood but mixed with Western film making too, so it would be a good introduction to the India film making world which is huge. It is as big if not bigger than Hollywood!
I AM STARSTRUCK:  If another Bollywood opportunity arises, would you take it?
REBECCA: That depends on the character.
I AM STARSTRUCK: What projects are you working on at the moment?
REBECCA: I did a pilot for a half hour comedy on CBS called ‘We Are Men’. That has since been picked up so I start shooting the first season in LA this August. Absolutely can’t wait!
FYI: We have a spin-off Bollywood blog called ‘I Am Starstruck: Bollywood’ and you can check it out HERE !
