DAN EWING ANNOUNCED AS 2013 RED NOSE DAY AMBASSADOR

‘Home And Away’ star Dan Ewing has been officially announced as the 2013 celebrity ambassador for Red Nose Day, an initiative raising funds and awareness for SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome).

Earlier this year, Dan and his wife Marni launched a charity initiative ‘Twenty To Go’ also dedicated to the cause.

We chatted to the couple at the ‘Twenty To Go’ Launch and you can watch the video HERE ! 

He may be a tough River Boy in Summer Bay, but Dan’s a real softie at heart!  Good on you Mr Ewing!

Why is the next five days so special from 7pm tonight?  

Well, gorgeous Aussie actress Esther Anderson will be returning to the Channel 7 drama to reignite some romance with onscreen love Daryl Braxton (played by Steve Peacocke).

Anderson’s character died on the show last year so it will be interesting to see how she reprises her role.

WHY PAPER GIANTS & OTHER AUSTRALIAN DRAMA IS HEADLINING OUR TELEVISION LANDSCAPE

If you watched Paper Giants: Magazine Wars on the ABC last night, this post is for you!

 Australian television has entered a new era placing it at its absolute peak.  Really!  Consider the following shows.  Offspring, House Husbands and Puberty Blues – shows produced locally, starring local casts and generating high ratings in their timeslots.

 What used to be a television landscape dominated by action driven cop shows from the US now touches on delving inside the mind of a thirty-something Melbournian woman’s fantasies about a sexy anaesthetist.  Nina Proudman from Offspring anyone?  Brilliant!

 But in all seriousness, I’ve been rather fascinated by the increased audience appeal for local drama.  So I headed down to the Sydney Writer’s Festival last week to listen to the writers of Offspring, Howzat! Kerry Packer’s War and Paper Giants: The Birth Of Cleo explain why Australian television is thriving and captivating the masses.

 Here’s my review on the event which was originally published on the official “At The Festival” Website:

 “Nina Proudman: what a mad bitch!” TV critic Ruth Ritchie opened her Writing Great TV commentary with her usual no holds barred approach. She was referring, of course, to the highly popular television character portrayed by Logie award winner Asher Keddie in Channel 10’s Offspring.

 Joining Ritchie on the panel were Offspring writer Debra Oswald and Christopher Lee, the writer of the television mini-series Paper Giants: The Birth Of Cleo and Howzat! Kerry Packer’s War’.

 The two veteran writers – working in the industry for two decades –  have been described as the scripting masterminds whose television series have revolutionised the nature of Australian television, carving out a new era for local televised content.

 Oswald’s high rating Offspring returned to screens last week for its fourth season, but when asked if she could have pitched the show ten years ago, she revealed that “we pitched if four years before it was wanted. We pitched it to all of the networks and everyone said no.”

So why has it taken so long for captivating ‘dramedy’ – the crowd-pleasing mix of drama and comedy – to claim its space on a television landscape historically dominated by action-driven cop, legal and hospital shows?

“A large part of it is the post-HBO revolution,” said Lee.  He believes that the US network responsible for the production of The Sopranos and Mad Men has influenced Australian producers.  “The producers in Australia had a look at this and thought we can do that.”

 He also attributed the high popularity of shows like Offspring to the shift in audience tastes.  “The audience itself has become better educated in drama and understands the nuances of better writing and better directing,” he said.

Oswald added that this had in turn put pressure on writing teams to continuously generate fresh, captivating content. “Audiences being more savvy about television does make the job sometimes more difficult… now there’s a million blogs and Facebook pages with people saying what they think is going to happen.”

Both writers see the exploration of three key themes – life, death and sex, along with a touch of humour – as underpinning the most successful television shows. Ritchie pointed to the fact that ”we’re getting really good Australian humour seeping into dramatic writing.”

Oswald said that Nina Proudman’s multi-dimensional life of work, family and romance is what keeps audiences watching. “I think that’s like real life and it’s fun to watch.”

“When you sit and watch Offspring, you’ll be likely to laugh, likely to be moved and more likely to have sex with your partner.”

FIRST LOOK: ESTHER ANDERSON’S 2013 RETURN TO ‘HOME & AWAY’

Awesome news for ‘Home and Away fans’, Charlie Buckton (played by Esther Anderson) will be returning to the Bay and fret not, viewers will be treated to some classic “CHAX” goodness!

After watching the newest preview though, our theory of the gorgeous cop being alive has been shadowed by a cloud of doubt BUT we’ll just have to wait till we watch the eps from 17th June to confirm - fingers crossed she’s not a ghost!

We’ll be featuring profiles of the boys on ‘I Am Starstruck’ in the next few weeks so you can get to know them a little bit better (and have an extra perve)!  

So today’s Cleo Bachelor pick is Scott Tweedie - this 25 year old originally from Queensland is the male host of Channel Eleven’s music show ‘The Loop’.  We chatted to him at the Cleo Bachelor Launch last week and hear it from us, Tweedie is a “Sweetie”! ;)

BATTLE OF THE TATTS - MATT LE NEVEZ VS STEVE PEACOCKE

I have a confession to make, I’m not the biggest fan of tattoos but if there was one TV sex god that floated my ‘body ink boat’, it would be Matt Le Nevez who plays Dr Patrick Reid on ‘Offspring’.

So since the second episode of ‘Offspring’ Season 6 hit ours screens tonight, I thought it was perfect timing to showcase Matt’s sexy physique with his cherry blossom tatt.

Let’s do a bit of a compare and contrast whilst we’re at it by including Steve Peacocke’s “Blood and Sand” tattoo (not real) that he sports on ‘Home and Away’.

‘AUSTRALIA’S NEXT TOP MODEL’ 2013 PROMO RELEASED

The new promo for Season 8 of ‘Australia’s Next Top Model’ has been released and to say we are super excited is a bit of an understatement.

In the one and a half minute clip, new host Jennifer Hawkins struts through a ballroom of supermodel potentials, all vying for the perfect, dazzling stiletto (note the Cinderella references coming into play).

With a judging panel consisting of Charlotte Dawson, Alex Perry and Didier Cohen, ANTM 2013 will hit our screens on Tuesday July 9th on Fox 8.

FIRASS DIRANI’S WORDS OF WISDOM
